Hornet Cup Round 1 - Mallory Park 21st April 2002
Race report by KEEFER
Mallory was bright and warm for the first round of the New Era Superclub Hornet and CB500 challenge. Some 20 Hornets lined for the first race with Carl Haslem making an early break for the lead followed by Tim Booth and Johnny Glendenning. These three started to pull clear but around lap 7 of ten Tim (No 26) went missing and the race was stopped. The top 10 results stand as:
The picture shows the Hornets streaming into Gerards, closely followed by the CB500s.
Sadly the red flag was the scene for the day, with some bad accidents causing most of the races to be stopped, including a 5 bike pile up at the start of the Pro Bike Open Race. Thankfully Race 2 ran the full 10 laps, with Johnny Glendenning having a fierce tussle with Carl and Tim right the way to the end, although he did have time for some nice wheelies out of the Mallory hairpin and even an overshoot on the brakes, winning with a margin of 0.15 seconds! The top 10 results from Race 2 stand as:
All in all a great days racing, and the Hornets were fantastic to watch. A blue bike won the first race and an bright orange one won the second (see photo). Please come along to rounds 2 and 3 on 18/19th May at Donington Park, and have a great day out.
Featured Rider In an effort to let people know some background on the guys racing, here is a profile of our own Scott Walker, poster on the Hornet's Nest Message Board and friend of Fast Si. Age: 31 Home Town: Burbage Years racing: 3 - second year Hornet Cup, though only two meetings last year Mods to Bike: Ohlins fork springs, Ohlins rear shock, Micron, Race body kit, BT012 (control tyres for the series), "tupperware" rev counter! One thing he'd change on the bike if allowed: set of full wets Why Hornets?: Started on CB500s and natural progression, relatively cheap, and great racing
How Scott's day went: Sadly Scott had a poor day, being taken out by a CB500 in race 1, and having to retire with handling problems in race two, although Scott was upbeat, having scored his fastest ever lap, and he felt he was getting to grips with setting up his rear suspension. He was also pleased with the BT012's, saying they felt like a BT56 but with more grip at the edges. Scott's advice to someone thinking of going racing: trackdays may be like sex, but only racing is the climax!
